University of
Pretoria
The University of Pretoria Onderstepoort Campus is situated in the northern part of Pretoria / Tshwane City.
FACTS AND FIGURES
Two 40ft container structures were renovated into ablutions. The ablutions had in total eight (8) showers and five (5) basins.
The hot water requirement for the ablutions was sized to comply with SANS 10400-XA2:2012. Based on the sizing done, the total Hot Water Demand was 960 litres per day for a population of sixteen (16) with sixty (60) litres per capita per day.
CUSTOMER NEED
The requirement was the supply and installation of a Hot Water Generation Plant for Onderstepoort Campus Chemical Store on top of two container ablution structures.
An efficient way of generating hot water was required and also to save on the electric demand to heat the water.
SOLUTION
SOLASMART proposed a hot water generation and storage solution based on the hot water demand and to add to the electric savings. In Phase One the team re-designed the existing solution specific to the current needs.
A Thermosiphon Solution was proposed that consisted of the following:
-
For both Containers - one (1) 300L Thermosiphon System plus one (1) 200L Thermosiphon System was installed in parallel.
-
The 300L Systems was equipped with two (2) Collectors each with a total aperture of 4.2 square meters and as backup an Electrical Element with a load of 3kW for each tank.
-
The 200L Systems was equipped with one (1) Collector each with a total aperture of 2.6 square meters and as backup an Electrical Element with a load of 2kW for each tank.
This solution not only results in generating FREE energy from the Sun to heat the water but also manages additional energy savings for the customer with an estimated payback less than three (3) Years.
